Visitors to The Art of Love got into the spirit of Valentine’s Day to help spread their love of art!
The Pacific Art League gallery was pleased to participate in Hearts for Art 2016 for the full run of our February exhibition, The Art of Love. A visitor engagement program started at the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio, this activity invited visitors to take a selfie or photograph next to an artwork they loved. They were then shared on social media with the hashtag #heartsforart and shared with PAL using our Twitter handle, @pacartleague. Other Bay Area participating exhibition venues included the Oakland Museum of California and the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History.
LOVE, LETTERS, LACE!
During the opening reception of The Art of Love, community members were invited to add pieces of romantic ephemera to a lace banner in the gallery. We pinned love letters, valentines, and photos of a beloved beside those of fellow visitors to construct a collective celebration of love. Paper valentines have been used to express romantic love since the fifteenth century, and lace has been associated with romance, birth and death since the sixteenth. This public artwork was on view throughout the exhibition, connecting the history and present of romance and affirming love as one wellspring of artistic vitality.
