This class will provide a foundation in classical drawing and realism. The focus is on rendering a convincing depiction of three-dimensional forms and spaces on a flat surface. Lectures, demonstrations, and drawing exercises will investigate basic principles of perspective and composition, developing light and shadow shapes and finishing artwork with precision. You will work first from still life objects, then from casts.

First class meets at the Pacific Art League in the Norton Gallery. We will focus on keeping a "visual journal" for fresh, spontaneous recordings of your surroundings. Learn contour drawing, shading and using shapes to add dimension, and create a functional art travel kit.The class will meet each week at a different, pre-determined location. We will deconstruct modern & contemporary themes as students develop a unique voice in their painting. Various methods of abstracting from life will be visited with the human figure as a subject, using the live model and photographs as a reference. First this class focuses on drawing skills that underlie a successful landscape painting, learning to compose a high-value contrast drawing from a photo. Learn the fundamentals of printmaking including studio safety, plate prepartion, paper, inking and the use of the press. Three techniques will be taught: relief, intaglio and collography. Solar etching is a non-toxic, non-acid method of printmaking that uses a metal plate coated with polymers and then exposed to UV light. Some experience in intaglio printmaking helpful, but not required. Mateirals fee $20 to instructor. Mario Rosales-Mejia

With clay as the building medium, you will learn sculptural techniques, form and structure. Special emphasis will be given to anatomy and how it relates to sculpture. You will work from a model at all sessions except the last one, when the class will prepare sculpture for firing. Firing of the art is the responsibility of the students - information about firing locations will be provided by instructor. Some materials provided by instructor at first class. This class teaches the carving of soft stone using hand tools: roughing out the initial shape, detailed shaping, polishing and sealing. Beginners start with a small stone; more advanced students work on large stones and more complex projects. Open Studios

Open Print Room
$200 for 10-day punch card (good for 6 months)
$25 for single day

The Print Room is open during business hours whenever there are no classes scheduled. It is generally unmonitored. If you need assistance with the use of the room, please check the schedule for hours when a Monitor will be present. You must either be a member or currently enrolled in a printmaking class to use the Open Print Room. For available days and times, please call the League at 650- 321-3891.

Fee: $15 per session (3 hours)
Studio space is available for artists to work on painting projects; advance registration is not necessary-please pay at the front desk prior to your session.

If you would like to advance your digital photography skills, this workshop is for you. First you will explore the right brain or “artist brain” response to photography, so that composition becomes the most important aspect to shooting. Then you will study the leftbrain or “logical brain” requirements, such as camera operation and essential features. Then put your new knowledge into action by taking a “digital walk shoot” in Palo Alto. The workshop ends with a constructive critique. Be

Learn how to use precious metal clay (fine silver in clay form) to create earrings and a necklace using a variety of texturing materials. Learn mold making, imprinting, slipping leaves and cork clay beads. Bring buttons or small (flat) charms to make molds. You’ll create the pieces during the first 2 classes , and patinate, polish and assemble during the last. Materials fee $50 plus $12 beginner’s tool kit to instructor.

For those who understand the basics of photography with your digital camera and want to learn composition techniques used in professional photography. Using existing photos, you will learn how to manipulate compositions using digital post-production techniques, discover helpful software and internet sites.
