Gallery Manager Job Specification

The Pacific Art League (PAL) is a prestigious Palo Alto non-profit, which for 96 years has been an important cultural destination for the local community, providing high caliber art classes across many different mediums. We are also known for our regular program of exhibitions which highlight the work of our teaching faculty, students, and local artists.

We have ambitious plans to raise the profile of our calendar of exhibitions, introduce innovative new shows and to secure high-profile curators from the Bay Area. Our gallery space and our exhibitions are a key showcase for PAL and we want to garner more press attention, with compelling shows, helping to enhance Palo Alto as a destination for the arts. We also want to position PAL as a unique place to buy high quality affordable art, here in this unique Silicon Valley destination.

To help us with these goals, we are seeking an experienced gallery professional with a record of accomplishment in managing a commercial gallery. The successful candidate will have extensive contacts with the local art community including artists, curators, press and other museum professionals.

The role of gallery manager will encompass the following functions:

  • Planning, organizing, hanging all exhibitions

  • Working closely with ED/CEO to develop a calendar of exhibitions across the full year – suggesting new ideas and potential partnerships

  • Promotion and sales of all works for sale in the gallery

  • Take ownership of the look and feel of the gallery space, including maintenance of walls and painted surfaces

  • Organizing storage to optimize exhibit space

  • Art handling and storage, coordination with artists

  • Recruit and develop relationship with jurors to constantly enhance the quality of the exhibits

  • Drive and own the submission process to maximize both the quality of submissions and revenue stream from submissions fees

  • Curate additional artist inclusions to augment low submission shows  

  • Maintain all sales records in consultation with the accounting manager
