JUROR | Chris Winfield

Artist Statement: Chris Winfield Artist Statement
For the past three decades, my painting interest has kept me happily working within a narrow focus.  Using a vocabulary of geometric shapes and pattern, which being painted freehanded, sanded and built with thin layers of color, gain an organic precision yet are not rigid.  The use of small colored edges help the shapes breathe and separate themselves from the background spaces.
It is in this shallow meditative space walls are felt to be real yet never physically solid.  I’m hoping to include the viewer in a space that is at once both active and completely silent and frozen in time.
Debt & Inspiration My father, my wife, the masters who painted the Ajanta Caves, Tibetan & Indian Tantric Art, true masters of light - Mark Rothko and James Turrell, All the artists past and present who’s work has kept my gallery a temple of creative energy that by being in, has kept my love of the visual language alive and well. Gary Smith for giving me my first one person show, and the true art patrons of the Monterey community Barbara and Bill Hyland.
