Free Community Art Workshop @Google Visitor Center: Mexican Tissue Paper Flowers

Flores de Papel: Mexican Paper Flowers with Pacific Art League

🗓 September 5th | 12:00pm-2:00pm

📍The Huddle @ Google Visitor Experience

2000 N Shoreline Blvd, Mountain View, CA 94043

In this creative workshop with Pacific Art League, participants will learn how to transform simple colorful tissue paper and pipe cleaners into dazzling Mexican paper flowers. We will guide you through the process of layering, folding, and fluffing tissue paper to create vibrant, festive blooms. This craft is fun for all ages and skill levels.

The history of paper flowers can be traced back to ancient China, where the art of paper flowers traveled along the Silk Road and reached Mexico during the colonial period. Mexican artisans embraced tissue paper—”papel de China”—and evolved it into a distinctive folk art form. Paper flowers have become deeply rooted in Mexican culture, used widely in religious ceremonies, weddings, altars or ofrendas, and festivals such as Día de los Muertos to symbolize joy, remembrance, and celebration, especially in communities where fresh flowers are scarce or too costly.

In this workshop, you’ll not only learn how to make beautiful paper flowers, but also take part in a rich tradition that blends creativity with cultural heritage.
