Artist Statement

Lone objects—activated by the play of light and shadow—have always drawn me in as subjects to paint. My compositions often exclude people, instead focusing on solitary boats, empty chairs, a newly set table, or a cup of coffee left untouched. These quiet moments suggest a presence just departed, or one soon to arrive.

Much of my inspiration comes from my own photography. Behind the lens, I often pre-compose many of my paintings. Earlier in my creative life, I worked as a food editor and stylist for Sunset Magazine—a role that honed my eye for composition, color, and atmosphere. Styling food and staging photos taught me how to tell a story without words, a skill that continues to shape my visual language.

Growing up in rural Oregon shaped my affinity for solitude, a theme that continues to echo in my work. Living along the Columbia River fostered a deep love for boats and water—recurring motifs in my paintings that convey a sense of peace and stillness.

My formal art journey began at age twelve with private oil painting lessons. I majored in art at the University of Oregon and earned my B.A. from Oregon State University in 1965. My education was enriched by extensive travel to 86 countries over four years while working for Pan American Airlines. Later, I pursued continued studies at San Mateo College, Cañada College, and San José State University—deepening my technique and expanding my artistic language.

Now working full-time from my studio in Atherton, I continue to explore the visual poetry of quiet moments and overlooked details. My work invites the viewer to pause, to notice, and to feel.
