Explore the depths of history and personal truth with Nata Drachinskaya’s groundbreaking project, Binom. More than just a photobook, and 2025 Luma Rencontres Dummy Book Award in Arles, Binom is a profound journey that intertwines a daughter's quest to understand her late father—a cryptographer for the KGB—with the broader, layered contradictions of Soviet and modern Russian society.

Nata's father lived a dual life, developing encryption algorithms for a regime that outwardly promoted peace while engaging in repression. This duality became the central theme of Binom, a project that masterfully blends archival materials—from family photos and official documents to personal slides—with Nata’s own poignant imagery. It’s a compelling narrative that moves beyond the personal, exploring how post-Soviet citizens have learned to live with competing truths.

This project began in Russia in 2019, continued through Nata's relocation to Armenia, the UAE, and the USA, and was meticulously refined through workshops and residencies. The dummy for the photobook was even shortlisted for international awards, a testament to its powerful visual storytelling and unique structure.

In 2025, Nata traveled to Japan to self-publish the book with support from the Reminders Photography Stronghold and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. The result is a stunning, hand-bound edition of 92 photobooks, a true collector's item.

Now, you have the opportunity to gain exclusive insight into the creative process behind Binom. Nata will share her story, from the initial search for a core idea to the challenges of securing funding and promoting the project. This is your chance to discover how a personal trauma was transformed into a powerful and internationally recognized artistic statement. The photobook Binom will be available for order, allowing you to own a piece of this extraordinary visual history.
